Triathlete Forced to Pull Out of Commonwealth Games Due to Heel Injury

foot-braceTriathlete Helen Jenkins tore her plantar fascia at this year’s WTS Hamburg, meaning that she won’t be able to compete for Wales in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. “I’m obviously devastated,” she said. “I will get more information from the specialist this week but with a grade two tear of my plantar fascia, it’s almost certain that I won't be racing again this season.”

This was Jenkins’ first year doing International Triathlon Union racing again after a knee injury forced her to miss 18 months of competition. In the time between her comeback and her current injury she was able to earn two silver medals and one bronze.

Heel pain can be caused by a variety of different kinds of foot and ankle conditions. If you are experiencing pain in your heel, visit podiatrist Dr. Harold Anderson of Central Texas Foot and Ankle Centers. Dr. Anderson can assess the problem and identify the best approach to treating your injury.

Causes of Heel Pain

- Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.
-Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.
Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

- Wearing ill-fitting shoes
- Wearing non-supportive shoes
- Weight change
- Excessive running

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles.

With the advancements in technology and greater knowledge of how muscles and joints work, physical therapists can turn things around dramatically.
